Romàns
d’Isonzo. Terrain chosen
by Enzo and Severino for their most prized vineyard, with American
grapevines, which was acquired in 1991. The Lorenzon’s immediate
instinct was that this terrain (near the frequently changing riverbed
of the Isonzo, with its diametrically opposed substratum), bright
red in colour yet frequently interrupted by gravely outcroppings,
was telling them “Keep me poor and I’ll make you rich”.
From these first fifteen hectares the crù “I Feudi
di Romans” was born.
In 1995 the Lorenzon’s seized another major
opportunity, acquiring a large apple orchard
bordering on the terrain where the first vines
of the “Feudi” crù were planted.
This property included 50 hectares of apple
trees, which were reduced to 25, making room
for the expansion of an existing 5 hectares of
vineyard, which along with a farmhouse and
surrounding dwellings were renovated by the
Lorenzons.
Today it is a pleasure to be greeted by these
beautiful surroundings!
45 hectares of vines all supported by wood poles.
An irrigation system which gently distributes water
in rain-like drops.
There are a minimum of 4000 vines per hectare, all
cultivated exclusively using the “Guyot” system, with
a careful selection of clones for each of the vines.
Whereas regulations would permit us a yield of 130
quintiles per hectare, we have chosen, for reasons of
quality, to limit ourselves to 80 quintiles per hectare.
The soil here is prevalently calcareous yet not
completely
permeable; there is a presence of red gravel but of even more agricultural
importance is an almost metre thick layer of soil, rich in iron.
Although subargillaceous the red soil has irony colloids whose coagulation
gives it a precious lacunar structure and which never, even during
drought, experiences pronounced fissuring.
